GPS and tracking accuracy
The COROS Apex 4 uses dual-frequency GNSS across multiple constellations. In dense terrain, canyons, and tree cover, dual-frequency locks reduce multipath error and produce tighter track lines compared to single-frequency competitors. This matters for trail runners and hikers who want accurate distance and elevation data in the field without a phone.
The Whoop MG has no onboard GPS. For outdoor runs, it depends entirely on your phone being present. If you run without your phone, distance and pace data are either absent or estimated from wrist acceleration. This is a hard limitation for any athlete who tracks route performance seriously.
Where Whoop MG compensates is heart rate accuracy. In controlled tests against a chest ECG strap reference, the Whoop MG worn on the bicep matched to within plus or minus 2.5 bpm under high-intensity mixed-modality conditions. That is a strong result. The COROS Apex 4 uses a standard wrist PPG sensor which performs reasonably well at steady effort but is more vulnerable to motion artifact during weight training or interval work. For pure heart rate accuracy in the gym or during HYROX-style events, Whoop MG has the edge.
Battery life
The COROS Apex 4 46mm delivers 65 hours of GPS recording with dual-frequency active and the display always on. That is not a stripped-down estimate. For a 50-hour ultramarathon or a multi-day fastpacking trip, it keeps recording when other watches stop. The 42mm version gives 41 hours, still class-leading for that size. Neither figure requires you to disable meaningful features to hit the number.
The Whoop MG lasts 4 to 5 days between charges using its slide-on battery pack, which allows charging while wearing. For continuous 24-hour monitoring including sleep, that runtime is competitive. However, the Whoop MG is not doing GPS work during that time. Comparing these two on battery is somewhat like comparing a laptop to a smartphone: the tasks are different enough that raw hours do not translate directly.
For athletes: who wins?
- Trail running and ultramarathon: COROS Apex 4. Onboard dual-frequency GPS, 65-hour battery, barometric altimeter, and rugged build are exactly what long-course trail athletes need. Whoop MG cannot function as a primary device here.
- Gym, CrossFit, and HYROX: Whoop MG. The bicep placement and optical sensor accuracy under mixed-modality conditions is measurably better than most wrist watches. The COROS Apex 4 will track heart rate but is more prone to motion artifact in these environments.
- Triathlon: COROS Apex 4. It handles swim, bike, and run with onboard GPS and multi-sport modes. The Whoop MG tracks heart rate continuously but cannot deliver GPS-based splits or pace for the bike and run legs without a phone.
- Recovery monitoring and HRV tracking: Whoop MG. Continuous 24-hour wear, skin temperature sensing, dedicated recovery scoring, and reference-class optical accuracy make it a more serious recovery tool. The COROS Apex 4 tracks HRV but it is not the primary focus of the device.
Verdict
For most athletes who want one device to cover training and daily wear, the COROS Apex 4 is the stronger buy. It works as a standalone GPS watch, handles multi-day expeditions without a charge, and does not require a subscription to use its core features. The Whoop MG is genuinely excellent at what it does, but what it does is narrow: continuous physiological monitoring with no display and no GPS. Buy the COROS Apex 4 if you run, hike, or race outdoors. Buy the Whoop MG if you train primarily in the gym, already own a GPS device, and want the best optical heart rate and recovery data available from a non-chest-strap sensor, and are willing to pay an ongoing subscription to access it.
